Abstract

The article intends to demonstrate that, although little referred, the reading and writing of the slaves in the nineteenth-century Brazil can be perfectly retrieved from multiple indices. The stigmatization of the slaves’ immersion in a world in which orality has always prevailed covers innumerous possibilities of literacy and reading in a society crossed over by printed matter.
