We will examine here spin-off works, especially in their textual logics of narrative derivation from parent works. From a poetic and narratological perspective, we emphasize intertextual operations, as well as the pragmatics that articulate the relationships between textual structures and reading horizons of these works. In the analysis of these products, we value the dialectic between “vagueness” and “coherence”: in the first, we identify what the master works hide as potential for intrigue; in the second, we identify the anchoring of derivative works to the parent works. We analyze how these textual derivation strategies work in the first season of Once Upon a Time.
