The Brazilian left and the fake news’ perception effects

This article investigates the Third Person Effect’s hypothesis related to fake news disseminated on Facebook. We studied how the left-wing assesses (n=1317) fake news’ effects on itself and on others. We assessed the following variables: i) the capacity to identify fake news, ii) the frequency of source checking, iii) previous experience of sharing fake news. The results show that individuals tend to overestimate the negative effect of fake news in distant groups and underestimate the effects on one’s self. The discrepancy tends to increase between those who consider themselves secure to identify fake news and those who check the sources.
