Abstract

Written at the height of the New Cinema phenomenon, Brazil in Movie Time (1967) of Jean-Claude Bernardet was the first movement analysis work. Pioneer in the criticism to the national popular culture, the book becomes mandatory piece for directors discussion and a theoretical reference of Brazilian cinema analysis for critics. The article evaluates the filmic analysis method developed by Bernardet from its dialogue with the sociology of worldviews and the materialist critique to give an overview of the evolution of these concepts in critics at the seventies.
