Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of dead time within sports broadcasts. We believe that images inserted in the television landscape when the time is out in the sport are important to the overall understanding of the sports narrative. In this understanding, dead time operates as energetic boost that releases television forms that give meaning to the events on the game field. To build our investigation, we observe the dead time on television, on the televised event and on the broadcast itself.
