Abstract

Through the analysis of the productive chain of A Dupla do Barulho (Carlos Manga, 1953) and its inclusion in the debate on race relations, this article intends to analyze two questions: to what extent racial rhetoric staged in the film is related to the moment of projection and to the expectations of its audience? And, as a result of the first question, in which ways the film features racial identities in the construction of hierarchies and tastes disseminated by mass culture? Our hypothesis is that the film presents a narrative which links between comedy and melodrama reinforce whiteness, whose is present diffusely in various products of mass culture.
