Abstract

This article argues for the necessity of including the mediatic construction of the idea of ‘avoidable suffering’ in the establishment of a critical grammar of images and narratives of suffering. The proposed inclusion stresses the singularity of the manner in which the power of human action is conceived in the contemporary world. It hence opens up a problematic field in which the ethical and political limitations of the idea of ‘avoidable suffering’ may be questioned. Drawing on the works of Nietzsche and Foucault, we conceptualize a historical shift from norm to risk as subject producing formations and suggest that a narrow conception of responsibility produces contemporary morality and authoritarianism. This argument is rendered concrete through the analysis of different critical stances towards the police in the crime coverage of newspaper O Globo in the years 1983 and 2001. We demonstrate how previous denunciations of torture are currently being replaced by denunciations of faulty provision of security by the State.
