This article aims to understand how the habits and experiences of Rio de Janeiro’s elite were reported by social columnists between the 1940s and 1960s in Rio de Janeiro’s main newspapers and magazines. It is based on the hypothesis that the publication of notes on the high society calendar helped to maintain hierarchies and legitimize the imaginary of consumption and leisure in the city. To do this, we look at how the gossip column, a style created by New Yorker Walter Winchell, began and how the model was imported into the Brazilian press. Through the lens of Textual Analysis, the study examines how these journalistic narratives connected the cultural production of taste to class dynamics.
