Abstract

This article approaches the carioca funk as a musical gender within the electronic music scene. Therefore, our aim is to understand it´s generic construction regarding appropriations and hybridizations, thus considering three mile stones for the comprehension and contextual definition of the phenomenon. The first one concerns it´s emergence in the Rio de Janeiro´s outskirts during the late 1970´s under the influence of Miami Bass. The second concerns the moment marked by the development of the carioca style, which introduced lyrics in Portuguese and exclusively Brazilian musical production, such as DJ Malboro´s outstanding work. Finally, the third regards the establishing of the funk gender amidst the experimental electronic music scene due to it´s association with electroclash. These milestones can associate itselves with different discourses on funk - which oscilate between both antagonist poles of demonization and valorization of the gender. Our premise derives from the discussion presented by Simon Frith and Jeder Janotti Jr on the concept of musical gender, in close dialogue with Martin-Barbero, Canclini and Will Straw, which includes also the historical aspects of funk as discussed by Hermano Vianna and Micael Herschman.
