Abstract

Uniting metanlinguistics and the reworking of genres with innovative montage strategies, incorporating the production process to the product or, in the extreme, presenting the process itself as product, the ethical-aesthetic project of quality TV of the Guel Arraes Division (TV Globo, Brazil) involves first and foremost a certain “pedagogy of the medium”. The Division’s shows have a clear intention to break away from the “naturalistic” approach to audiovisual representation: scene staging is evident, TV acts as its own theme; reality is presented as a construct of the language. By incorporating the aesthetic strategies and recurrent ethical concerns in all the production of the Guel Arraes Division, the series Cena Aberta (2003) can be considered as a synthesis of its proposal to educate/instruct the audience on the very workings and praxis of making as well as watching TV.
