Abstract

A survivor of Khmer Rouge’s revolution that killed most of Kampuchea’s population in the years 1975-1979, the filmmaker Rithy Panh dedicated his work to that tragical chapter of the history of the country. Why only in his last film – L’image manquante (2013) – a narrative where Kampuchea’s history is mixed with his family life, Panh used the narrative in first person? Before being able to use “I” in his films it was necessary first to talk about the documents and the oral sources, in a thorough work of listening that Panh started in the late 1980’s.
